Continuing Education Program

30 CEU Credit Subtle Body Project This continuing education opportunity for yoga instructors is perfect for both experienced instructors who need some new inspiration or feel drawn towards deepening their own personal practice.  Instructors who completed an RYT in a vinyasa flow style will find that this seminar series provides a greater depth of knowledge for teaching meditation or facilitating a flow class in a more mindful and therapeutic way.  The emphasis on embodied anatomy and the subtle body gives you a more dynamic set of teaching tools no matter what style you were originally trained in or, ultimately, are teaching.  This is a wonderful chance to complete continuing education credits while connecting with other teachers local to Pittsburgh without having to travel or figure out how to manage a residential program or time commitment. We look forward to these Wednesday seminars as inspiring, informative and also restoratives.  Instructors need to take some time for developing awareness, compassion and for self-care so we don’t burn out.  We hope you will join us for what is …

Spread Your Lips for a Better Birth

I have a prediction that this may become one of my most popular blog posts.  Just wanted to put that out there right from the start. Ina May Gaskin has noted that: Early in my midwifery career, I observed another fascinating relationship pertaining to the Law of the Sphincter.  I noticed a strong connection between the sphincters of the mouth/throat and those of the cervix and yoni.  A relaxed mouth means a more elastic cervix.  Women whose mouths and throats are open and relaxed during labor and birth rarely need stitches after childbirth. (Gaskin, pg. 178) Research now shows that what Ina May Gaskin observed is also supported by actual anatomical features of the mouth and cervix.(As of 4.16.16 it has come to my attention that this link no longer works.) Cervix and vocal fold tissue behave similarly in smear tests.   So mamma, what can you do to keep all your lips relaxed from your mouth to your perineum? 1. Keep people with you in labor who can help you laugh, remind you to …

Seven Stress Related Health Problems

Here are seven stress-related health problems you can do something about with gentle yoga and meditation.  Remember, stress isn’t a “feeling”–it is a physiologic response to perceived (or real) danger.  It isn’t in “your head” and yoga and meditation provide release of deeply held tensions, fears and anxieties through physical, mental and spiritual exercises. Heart Disease and Diabetes Stress raises your glucose levels making it harder to manage Type 2 diabetes.  Mindfulness-based meditation programs have been proven to reverse heart disease. Asthma Chronic stress makes asthma worse and children with stressed-out parents are more likely to have asthma. Obesity Stress causes higher levels of the hormone cortisol which makes you collect fat around your middle. Headaches Migraines and tension headaches.  Enough said. Depression and Anxiety Adults who report having stressful jobs (like having a lot of work and very few rewards) have an 80% higher chance of developing depression than adults who do not report a stressful work environment.  It’s unlikely that you can change your work situation overnight, but you can change your response …

Love Letter Thursday 2.28.13

28.2.13 Pittsburgh, PA I want to live in a world where everyone believes that each new day represents a completely new opportunity.  It really breaks my heart when I talk with my friends, family or students and they feel as though their future has been determined by the mistakes, adversity or experiences of their past.  I see so many of us feeling stuck and in the feeling place of lacking the velocity to bring ourselves out of a trajectory that has us on the wrong track, but we feel like we just aren’t the “type of person” that makes changes “like that” or perhaps we feel doomed to be just like ______________(fill in the blank with the name of some relative).  Sometimes, it is just so hard to see around the obstacles and challenges in our life. I want you to feel powerful in the face of change and adversity.   So, I’ve created, just for you, a sweet meditation practice where you take a little bit of time (an hour and fifteen minutes to …

I’ve Got Soba. Yes I Do!

This post answers the call that regularly haunts yoginis all over the world: I’ve got Soba.  Yes I do! I’ve got Soba. How about you? And, lest we get stuck in some circular nutrition chant that leaves us all hungry and with an increasingly dusty box of soba noodles in our pantries, I’m going to cook my soba noodles tonight.  Yes, I am. I’ve got a box of Soba Pasta that has been giving me the evil eye on my pantry shelf for a more than a few weeks now.  I love soba noodles and I”m pretty sure that at least one of my children will gobble them right up…….but I just haven’t been sure how to make them.  As I have a winter farm share, I’m also trying to take advantage of the local veggies that I have in my fridge that will go bad soon unless I figure out what to do with them—-and SOON! So, tonight, I think I am making this recipe from the Eden Foods website.  I’ll let you know …

For the Love of Lavender

Since I feel particularly calmed and grounded by the scent of lavender, I thought I would re-post this informative article written by David Crow on how lavender can be used to promote health and well-being for everyone in your household.  As we approach Valentine’s Day, I reflect on how this scent brings me into a state of open awareness that is also beneficial to my meditation and yoga practices.  Regardless of your state of partnership or romance this season, how delightful to take an opportunity to think about ways to live more deeply from your heart and to ground your decision making and movements from this deepest and our original seat of intelligence.  And, if you are new to buying essential oils from Floracopeia, please take advantage of the 25% discount I offer to my students.   Lavender By David Crow, L.Ac. (Published in Yogi Times, Oct. ‘04) Lavender is one of the most well-known, versatile, and extensively used essential oils in the world. When we use lavender essential oil we receive the blessings of …

Benefits of Co-Sleeping for Dads

I don’t want to get into an argument about co-sleeping with you dear reader, but I thought that all my Matrika Moms and Dads might find this article interesting.  Whether you co-sleep or not, it suggests that there is an endocrine response to behavior.  The more involved Dad is, the lower his testosterone.  The mind-body connection never ceases to amaze me! Crafty with Bad Habits?

Are you crafty AND have a few bad habits you’ve been meaning to lose (or maybe just a few pounds)?  Then you’ve got to take advantage of this workshop offered by IMI (I Made It): Creating Healthy Habits facilitated by Emily Levenson.  It look s great and I’m hoping to be there myself.  The workshop is at Quiet Storm on February 28th from 6:00-7:30pm and costs $20.  The yogis say that it takes 40-days to make something a habit.  If you are looking to add a good habit to your repertoire, let me suggest a private session with yours truly.  In an hour and a half we can explore the change you wish to make and I can teach you a simple energy technique that works with your brain to speed up the transformation and a 40-day meditation to keep your commitment bright and strong.  Mention the following code when you make your appointment and I’ll provide a good habit forming session with you (1.5 hours) for the price of a 50-minute session (save $50!): …

Yoga Mat Review

Use your own yoga mat.  Not only does it reflect good studentship and help you set the intention of creating a regular practice, but a yoga mat is truly a personal use item.  Good yoga hygiene requires that you own your own mat, clean it often (just throw it in the washing machine with a little bit of Bronner’s soap) and bring it with you wherever you go for practice.  Just in case you need some inspiration to buy your own mat, here is an article from the New York Times in 2006 that illuminates some of the bacterial and fungal infections that are caused by sharing yoga mats. What mats do I suggest?  Well, I have enjoyed quite a few different brands of mats, but the ones I purchase for the studio and the brand of the very first yoga mat I ever bought (17-years ago and still in relatively good shape!) are from Hugger Mugger.  Hugger Mugger offers a wide selection of yoga mats to fit every yoga style and budget, but I …
