Tension Relief for Pregnancy

Relax & Find Calm

Tension Relief for Pregnancy Tele-Workshop and Recording

Tuition: $15
(Includes  MP3 download so you can enjoy the relaxation as many times and as often as you like!)
Thursday, August 1, 2013
10:30 to 11:30 am (USA, Eastern)

Recording available a few hours after the event through August 7, 2013.

  • Relieve tension in head, neck and shoulders

  • Release water retention and discomfort in hands and wrists

  • Learn a simple breathing exercise to help you relax at any time

  • Experience a deep relaxation and yogic sleep that will refresh your body, mind and spirit even more than a nap (yes, really!)

Traditional pregnancy yoga and meditation classes and workshops require you to set aside time to attend that single event. Unfortunately, this means that you only have one chance to attend and perhaps you are exhausted that day or childcare for your toddler or older children falls through.  Matrika Tele-Workshops are simply fabulous because you can enjoy the workshop when it is most convenient for YOU and practice relaxation techniques with the guided recording as many times as you like through pregnancy and beyond.

What Does Matrika Mean?

What does ‘Matrika’ Mean?

What’s In a Name?

There are many different styles of yoga and new traditions are being created each and every day. If you are new to yoga, all of the different names for yoga classes, different studios and teachers can seem confusing at worst and unclear at best. If you have practiced yoga for some time, you may only be familiar with one style or perhaps you have a teacher or studio that you loved in a different city and can’t seem to find what you are looking for. As we grow in our practice and as the circumstances of our lifestyle and our bodily realities shift and change, our yoga practice changes. Therefore, the best advice that I would give anyone is to be open to new styles and new teachers and trying new things—-you never know when you might find the perfect fit for where you are right now. If you take a yoga class that you don’t like or with a teacher you weren’t particularly fond of, try not to be discouraged! Just roll up your mat, mark it up to experience and try a different class or a different teacher.

What is Yoga Matrika’s Style?

While yoga is great for your body and you will see and feel a positive difference in your body shape, level of flexibility and skin clarity with regular practice, yoga is not primarily an exercise program. The primary goal of yoga offered by Sharon through Matrika Yoga (Matrika Calm, Matrika Flow, Matrika Prenatal, Matrika Mom & Baby) is to enhance the mind-body connection. When we move and breathe mindfully, there is a therapeutic response from every system of the body. For more athletic students, this idea that “less is more,” can feel quite strange and the practice may even feel frustrating or boring at first. Learning to balance effort and ease, to breathe with full expansion and release, to move with clarity and excellent alignment and to stretch and open the body by giving permission instead of a push are all part of developing a yoga practice.

What exactly IS a MATRIKA?

Yoga Matrika Traditions and Inspiration

The Matrikas: aka “Little Mothers”

The MATRIKAS are the “little mothers” and they inspire us to an intelligent, compassionate, fierce and delicious practice. Sharon Rudyk was inspired to open Yoga Matrika after the birth of her son. His birthing was a struggle that required incredible strength, passion and violence that resulted in the most spectacular transformation from pregnancy to motherhood. This struggle is embodied in the Matrika goddesses who are both soft and maternal and violent destructors and warriors. These Matrika goddesses inspire all of us, men and women, to accept both the creative and destructive sides of ourselves so that we can be whole. We stop battling ourselves and become centered in our own strength and warrior spirit. With practice, we start to know that we are on our own side. Stepping off our mat and into the world, we are strong, confident and compassionate as we recognize that we and all of the living things around us are most beautiful in complexity. What we have to offer humanity is most fabulous because it is unique and not because it is perfect.

MATRIKA SHAKTI is also the powerful energy vibrations of the sounds that make up our internal truth.

In Hindu mythology, Brahma the creator, first showed himself as a golden embryo of sound. He was a vowel, vibrating outward, the sound echoed back upon itself and became water and wind. In Sanskrit, this power is called Matrika Shakti, the inherent creative energy behind the letters that make up words. It is said that each letter of the Sanskrit alphabet has a corresponding sound vibration both in the subtle energy channels of our bodies and in the cosmos. When these sound vibrations resonate with a corresponding vibration within us they create thoughts, then these thoughts gradually manifest the grosser forms of feelings and then speech. The Matrika Shakti resides in our energy body and rises of its own volition into consciousness, manifesting as our thoughts. [Original Reference HERE]

Through our practice of meditation, yoga asanas and mantra, we create a new kind of matrika that transforms our experience of life itself. We are purified, relieved and open to the fullest expression of our most genuine selves. We create greater potential for relationship by cultivating compassion for all living beings. This is not about being perfect or adhering to a strict regimen of diet or rules. Rather, it is about tuning our instruments of life to the matrika shakti that travels the energy channels of the body. It is about opening to the darkness so that the light may shine through.

What to Expect in a Matrika Prenatal Class

We do not expect prenatal yoga students to have any experience with yoga. Our prenatal yoga classes are appropriate for women in all weeks of pregnancy. Although each instructor has their own style and may provide a different emphasis or tone to their class, all classes include some stretching and breathing exercises, some asana (yoga poses) that will tone and strengthen the body and relaxation. There is no wrong way to do yoga and the more often you practice, the more familiar you will become with the poses. As you become more familiar with the poses and exercises, then you can turn your focus inward. Although some poses may be challenging and you will feel the stretches as you create greater flexibility in your body, you should never feel pain in a yoga class. This is true in any yoga class and not just prenatal yoga! If you are ever uncomfortable or have questions, your instructor can help you modify a pose or answer any questions that you might have. Our classes are intimate and non-competitive so you can receive personalized attention from well-trained instructors.

Our classes are not just gentle yoga classes modified for pregnancy. Our prenatal programs are designed specifically for pregnancy and we use yoga to prepare for birth and for being a mother. Labor, birth and mothering a newborn are not easy tasks. The focus, strength and awareness that you learn in prenatal yoga classes will give you the skills you need to meet these tasks with confidence. We support one another and the entire Matrika community is here for you now and after you have your baby.

Prenatal Yoga Pittsburgh

Yoga Matrika has been providing high quality yoga-based services for expectant women, their partners and families, new moms and families with infants in Pittsburgh for almost five-years now.  We were really lucky last week to have the amazing, generous and talented Sandy Yetter of Red Lotus Photography come to the studio last week to capture some of the wonderful energy at the studio in a Mom and Baby class and a Prenatal Yoga class.  Thank you to all the moms who agreed to be present and share their experience with Sandy.  I think that you, dear reader, will agree, there are very special things happening at The Mat!

I think a course in
photography from a graphic design college
may be just the thing I have
been looking for!

Red Lotus Photography

I don’t like having my picture taken because the way I see myself reflected in photographs is not generally how I think of myself—-is my hair really that gray? Are those four folds in my neck skin? You get the idea.

Yesterday, Sandy Yetter of Red Lotus Photography came to take individual pictures of Team Matrika and she’s changed my mind forever about being photographed.  It seems that, with a talented photographer, it is possible for me to see myself in a photograph and have it resonate with how I feel about myself.  Sandy is incredibly talented working with a diverse group and managed to get my exhausted, hungry and seriously cranky daughter to smile and cuddle with me on camera.  It seems that all ages feel the great power that is Sandy!  Just from the previews, everyone on Team Matrika really felt that Sandy captured their personality and took photographs that were complementary, warm and pleasing.

Red Lotus Photography and Yoga Matrika are partnering up to support both great yoga and capturing your most significant moments on film.  Sandy specializes in pregnancy and infant photography, but she also does weddings and, obviously, adult portraits.  More about this partnership to come, but in the meantime, I am just delighted to share this wonderful resource with the greater Yoga Matrika Community.  If you are looking for a wonderful photographer, you could not find a more professional or talented artist than Sandy Yetter.  Over the next few weeks, you’ll see some of Sandy’s amazing work on our websites and at the studio.

Thank you Sandy!

New Preeclampsia Research

Matrika Prenatal, Pittsburgh’s premier yoga studio dedicated to prenatal yoga, postnatal yoga, family yoga and childbirth education,  is always trying to stay on top of new research in women’s health.  Here is a very interesting study that discusses the role of trophoblasts (a father directed cell) in preeclampsia.

Meditation Series

This fall, Yoga Matrika is offering a 12-week Meditation Series facilitated by Bhante Pema. This is a very unique opportunity in Pittsburgh to study and practice meditation. By making a 12-week commitment, you will start to see the benefits of regular practice over the course of three-months.

Dr. Josephine Briggs, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine, says that, “It is now well established that the meditative state can be associated with changes in electrical function of the brain, and recent imaging studies suggest that there may actually be neuroanatomic changes as well.”  In addition, a new study by the Public Library of Science suggests that regular meditation can have a significant impact on stress related illnesses. “The study found that in comparison to a control group of people who had never meditated, a group of regular meditators actually suppressed twice the number of genes that induce stress responses such as high blood pressure and inflammation in the body.Long term effects of the expression of stress-related genes can have very harmful effects on health, including high blood pressure or chronic pain. Those who meditate regularly are thus at a greatly decreased risk for developing these problems.”

According to NCCAM, over 20 million Americans practice meditation for a variety of health benefits. You can find out more about meditation and the types of research that are being conducted now regarding meditation and impact on specific health problems here.

Our course instructor, Bhante Pema, is a Buddhist monk and is currently the resident teacher and abbot of the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center.  He is also working on a Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.  While the instructor is a Buddhist monk, the meditation style and techniques that are taught in this course are secular and this is not a religious group and instruction in Buddhism is not provided.  Everyone is welcome to learn these techniques to benefit their health and well being.

REGISTER HERE: $130 for 12-week course

A View of Homebirth

For many years, way before her beautiful daughters were even a twinkle in her eye, I took yoga classes with Schuyler Grant in New York at Kula Yoga.  She’s a truly gifted yoga teacher and has been an inspiration for me personally and professionally.  While I am not personally the poster-child for homebirth, I was just delighted to come across this YouTube video of Schuyler talking about her personal home birthing experiences that also included these images of her own birth experiences.  They are a reminder of how strong we are and how beautiful it is to give birth.  When the internet is filled with scary stories and terrifying images are everywhere, what a gift it is to have Schuyler share these images that communicate her strength and adoration of her children in every slide.

Thank you Schuyler and I hope that all the Matrika Mammas out there ENJOY!  Watch the video by following this link.
