HOW DO WE WORK TOGETHER?

If you live in Pittsburgh or surrounding suburbs, then we can meet together in person in a beautiful treatment room at Mookshi Wellness Center (401 Biddle Avenue, 2nd Floor above Biddle’s Escape Cafe in Regent Square).

If you live anywhere else in the world, then we can work together using the power of the internet making geographical location and distance irrelevant.  You will need access to the internet and SKYPE or we can use Google to “hang-out.”

WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU COACH PEOPLE TO DO?

The mind and body are always aligned, but sometimes we start living as if this is not the case.  In mind body therapy, I use a variety of techniques to help you feel more connected in mind and body. I choose the techniques that I think will be most helpful to you in meeting your goals: relaxation, mindful movement, breathing practices, mindful eating and meditation are common skills that I instruct my clients in using to support their own well-being.  In addition, I offer instruction in planning menus, improving quality of sleep, using a basal thermometer to track menstrual cycles and other practical and specific lifestyle skills that support your goals.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

Most women see evidence of benefits to our work together within 6-sessions. In general, the lifestyle changes including diet, exercise and meditation have both immediate benefits and women find that they are able to meet their original goals that were identified during the initial consultation between 6-months to one year.  This is an empowering process where you learn how to improve the quality of your life.  Once you learn the skills, they are yours to keep and use forever.

DISCLAIMER

During our initial consultation,  I will want to make sure that you have sought out appropriate medical care and diagnosis to rule out any medical conditions, illness or disease that can cause pain, irregular cycles, bloating and other symptoms as described above.  I am not a doctor and offer holistic lifestyle consultations and support for women who have chronic reproductive organ and system health concerns that are not treatable through bio-medicine.  While rare, there are serious conditions that can cause similar symptoms to PMS or PCOS, irregular cycles and infertility.  My advice is not meant to replace professional medical care and I will never recommend that you stop taking any prescribed medication or treatment plan that has been prescribed by a doctor or mental health professional.  If you have not already had an exam and evaluation by a medical professional regarding your condition, I will recommend that you do so as soon as possible in our initial consultation.

Crafty with Bad Habits?

Are you crafty AND have a few bad habits you’ve been meaning to lose (or maybe just a few pounds)?  Then you’ve got to take advantage of this workshop offered by IMI (I Made It): Creating Healthy Habits facilitated by Emily Levenson.  It look s great and I’m hoping to be there myself.  The workshop is at Quiet Storm on February 28th from 6:00-7:30pm and costs $20.

The yogis say that it takes 40-days to make something a habit.  If you are looking to add a good habit to your repertoire, let me suggest a private session with yours truly.  In an hour and a half we can explore the change you wish to make and I can teach you a simple energy technique that works with your brain to speed up the transformation and a 40-day meditation to keep your commitment bright and strong.  Mention the following code when you make your appointment and I’ll provide a good habit forming session with you (1.5 hours) for the price of a 50-minute session (save $50!): NEW ME.

Appointments are available at your convenience and we can even work together on SKYPE with a distance session.  Call (412) 855-5692 or send an e-mail to me at: sharon@yogamatrika.com in order to reserve your session today!

Private Yoga with Sharon Rudyk

In January 2013, I will be expanding my private yoga business in Pittsburgh.  Here is some information on why you might choose to take private sessions and how to get started.

What is a Private Session?  What are the Benefits?

Studying with Sharon is a holistic experience and you will be honored and kept safe as you explore movement, breath and mind.  Sharon does not offer large group classes and prefers to work with small groups or in private sessions.  Therefore, your experience with Sharon will be quite different than it might be at a large studio or gym where you get “lost in the crowd.”  This is a space for healing, personal transformation and the development of yoga-based skills that can be used throughout life to improve well-being and quality of life.

Private yoga sessions are scheduled at your convenience and Sharon will design your sessions based on your personal goals and what you would like to accomplish during each individual session.  For some students, they just find that due to their lifestyle or personality, they prefer private sessions.  For other students, they truly require private sessions due to an illness, mental or emotional condition, injury, disability or other physical, emotional or spiritual issues that demand individualized attention.  Whatever your reason for seeking private instruction, Sharon is delighted to work with you.

Studio Sessions

  • Studio sessions are all 50-minutes in length each and may be shared by up to two adults.
  • Please contact Sharon for payment plan options and to arrange for off-site or larger group sessions (412) 855-5692.

How many sessions do I need?

This is difficult to answer in a broad way as each student is different, but here are some general guidelines in terms of length of private study based on student goals.

New To Yoga Many students who are completely new to yoga find it helpful to take private sessions before practicing in a group environment.  Sharon finds that eight sessions, approximately one a week for two-months, is enough that most adults who are in relatively good shape find that they are confident enough to move forward practicing with a group.

Want to Design a Home Practice Many students want help designing a home practice that they can do on their own—-either at home, when traveling or to compliment classes and workshops that they like to take.  The length of time it takes to design an individualized home study program varries based on student experience level, personal goals and more.  But, in general, a student who has been taking yoga classes regularly for at least a year can learn a home practice sequence in about four-sessions.

My Lifestyle Requires Personal Sessions You may be a professional with so many meetings, responsibilities or be “on call” at all times or an artist or parent or care giver or someone who works “odd” shifts or maybe you are a grandparent who travels regularly to see your grandkids all over the world—-whatever your reason, it may be that you just can’t make it to group classes regularly.  That’s OK!  Schedule sessions at your convenience whenever you are able.

Experienced Student/Teacher Perhaps you are a yoga teacher who would like some one on one support for issues in teaching, alignment or for your own practice of more advanced poses, pranayama or meditation.  If you are working on a specific pose, a type of practice or just feel burned-out and need some new ideas to inject your practice with passion again, a private session might be just what you need!

Living with Chronic Pain, Illness, Stress or Anxiety If you are living with chronic pain (headaches, back/neck or shoulder pain, muscle or bone pain, pain from surgery or major injuries) or have a serious illness (cancer, chronic fatigue) or have severe stress and anxiety and are seeking to use yoga as part of your healing and wellness plan, then you will need to consult with Sharon about the best plan of action.  Many clients find that, with six to twelve months of regular sessions, they are not only in less pain and discomfort, but that they are able to practice on their own or in a group and experience the same benefit.  Working with a significant health issue is not a quick fix, but yoga has been documented to help alleviate many of these problems and does support other treatments that you may be receiving.  Sharon is NOT a doctor and it is important that you maintain your relationships with your doctors, take your medicine as prescribed and use yoga as a complementary practice.  If you are under the care of a doctor, it is important that you get their permission to start yoga.

Cancer Diagnosis, Compromised Immune System, Too Sick to Travel to the Studio? Sharon provides healing sessions and deep relaxation practices through SKYPE, over the phone or can sell you an interactive e-book or audio recording of practices that you can use at ANY time and in ANY place.  These sessions are not physically active and only require that you lie down in a comfortable place and have the means to actively listen to Sharon’s voice live over the phone (put me on speaker phone) or to a recording.

Reading to Prepare for the Storm

Knowing that I will most likely not have the opportunity to read for pleasure for about a year (maybe more?), I have been taking advantage of the absolutely wonderful public library system here in Pittsburgh and reading everything I can get my hands on.  For those of you who are expecting your first child, you may not understand why I would think that I wouldn’t have time to read for pleasure in the coming year. Expectant parents read the baby books that indicate that babies sleep for 14-18 hours per day of 24 and they think that they will have those 18-hours to themselves.  HA!  For those of you who have ever parented an infant, you know that I am one smart cookie! Honestly, I may be preparing for the storm that never comes and I may actually get a chance to read a few books this coming year.  Who knows?  In the meantime, bring on the storm my wee one——I’ve filled my head with enough fiction for at least two years!

When I read something that is particularly delightful, I try to post at least the title and author so that, if you are looking for a recommendation, you can explore my prenatal reading frenzy postings for ideas.  Just so you know, I am trying to avoid anything violent, terrifying, and terribly sad.  So, my reading suggestions are perfect if you are looking for easy reads that are well written, engaging, but don’t take a whole lot of literary prowess to conquer (I AM pregnant…….).

This past week, I was able to check-out a book that I had placed on reserve a while back by Marina Lewycka titled, “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian.”  And no, my sweet readers, I did not also decide to learn Ukrainian this past year in preparation for the storm!  This wonderful little story is written entirely in English.  I read this novel in one night and enjoyed every wonderful word. I laughed out loud.  I worried.  I found the characters to be flawed in the most fabulous of ways.  This novel is the story of an 86-year old man who falls in love.  This novel is the story of two adult sisters who are brought together after years of feuding.  This novel is the story of the capacity of the human spirit to endure through tragedy and hardship.  It’s a novel about war, globalization, generalizations, feminism and how these all manifest themselves in family dynamics.

Pregnant or not, I can’t imagine that you won’t enjoy this quick read that warms your heart and makes you think at the same time.  Enjoy!
