Closing the Studio

This past summer, with just 90-days notice, OM Yoga in New York City closed after 15-years of providing leadership in New York’s yoga scene because they lost their lease.  Cyndi Lee’s response was incredibly graceful and resonates deeply with my own feelings right now: “Also, it sounds cheesy but I’m just super grateful that the causes and conditions arose for me to build that yoga studio and that the community grew and developed, and it’s been beautiful. I feel really proud because there has been no badness, only goodness, and I think it’s time to celebrate that.”  (Original Source/Full Interview) When my baby boy was just six-months old, my dear husband agreed to help me renovate the space at 1406 S. Negley Avenue so that I could start a yoga studio business.  I knew absolutely nothing about running a yoga studio, marketing, websites, etc.  What I knew was that yoga was the most significant force in my life and brought me great peace no matter what was going on.  I felt so strongly about it …

Yoga Studio Etiquette

Welcome to Sharon Rudyk Yoga New today?  We have a waiver for you to sign.  Please introduce yourself to the instructor at the front desk. Please leave your shoes in the front.  We practice in bare feet here. Print your name in the sign-in notebook before class. Kindly turn OFF all cell phones and all electronic devices and remove your watch. Even “vibrate” sounds quite loud in a quiet room. Arrive Early.  Showing up late is disrespectful and disruptive and can easily become a bad habit. Instructors are not required to admit or teach late students.  If you are admitted late, please wait at the screen until after there is talking and movement and then put your mat out and join the class. Bring your own mat for best hygiene. Please make your instructor aware of any health conditions, injuries or concerns.  Not every pose is right for every body and we want to partner with you for safety. Wear modest and comfortable exercise …

Yoga Matrika Schedule

Creating a schedule of yoga classes for Yoga Matrika has always provided me with great illumination and inspiration.  When I first opened the little studio on South Negley, I was teaching the majority of classes myself and a number of very talented local instructors generously agreed to teach a few classes each week.  But, for the most part, it was me and there were less than 10-classes on the schedule each week.  The reality of finding talented instructors who were a good match for Yoga Matrika proved to be one of my earliest challenges in this business. Then, what started to happen was that the Universe started to send me fabulous instructors and many of these teachers have shaped the path of Yoga Matrika.  For example, Heidi —–an angel who took over at the studio without any guidance when I needed to travel for my grandmother’s funeral.  And Julie who became one of the community’s favorite prenatal instructors after agreeing to take some of my own classes without very much guidance or support.  And Bethany, …
