Summer Camps
2024
Language
Enjoy a playful introduction to Mandarin Chinese and Uighur languages. Campers will learn how to write some basic Chinese characters. We will also look at some traditional literature and poetry.
Arts
Calligraphy and painting with ink on rice paper will be introduced. Campers will use traditional paints, inks, and brushes. Additionally, we will do a variety or projects using traditional Chinese and Uighur arts and crafts.
Culture
Campers will enjoy a daily practice of Qigong and learn about Chinese architecture, archaeology, science, and medicine. These topics are embedded in the movement and crafts projects.
From the Great Wall to the borders with Tibet and Central Asia, we will explore language, culture and art. Projects will include calligraphy, painting with traditional brushes on rice paper, writing Chinese characters, poetry, embroidery, jewelry making, playing games, and learning some Mandarin Chinese and Uighur language. Artists will have an opportunity to learn about art, architecture, archaeology, religion, science, and medicine all while creating, moving, singing, and playing. Each day, we will also practice some Chinese yoga (Qigong). Absolutely no experience with world language or knowledge of Chinese or China is expected or required.
Language
Enjoy a playful approach to conversational French through stories, poetry, songs, and games. Opportunities to write in French will be given to campers who would enjoy the activity. Emphasis will be on sounds, culture of communication, and daily conversation.
Arts
Rooted in art from Francophone cultures around the world, projects will include mosaic, painting, paper cutting, collage, fashion, charcoal sketching, architecture, print making, map design, jewelry, and fiber arts.
Culture
Campers will practice mindful movement and dance as part of each day’s activities. French cultures from around the world will be introduced through poetry, stories, music, and exploring themes in action with relevant projects.
From Senegalese glass painters to the Chauvet Caves, artists will learn about French and Francophone culture and art from around the world. Projects will include mosaic, painting, paper cutting, collage, fashion, charcoal sketching, architecture, print making, map design, jewelry, fiber, and paper arts. Participants will learn some French language through games, songs, and movement. Absolutely no experience with world language or knowledge of French art and culture is expected or required. Each day, we will practice some mindful movement and dance as a part of the curriculum.
