Embodying the Skeletal System
Facilitated by Mark Chandlee Taylor
Credit Hours: 60
Tuition: $945 (payment plans available)
Your living bones are amazing. They work together to provide your body with form and clarity in relationship to space. The joints between them provide articulation and movement. The resulting skeletal system creates a container for your organs and soft tissues, provides the ability to resist gravity while you move in space, and forms the cellular nursery for your young blood cells. In this course you will develop a strong working knowledge of the skeletal system (anatomy, physiology, movement analysis, and kinesiology); begin the process of embodying your bones; and acquire skills in movement facilitation and hands-on repatterning work that are applicable to the study and teaching of yoga, dance, and other movement forms. You will embody your own structure and learn to help others to do the same.
Yoga Matrika is presenting Embodying the Skeleton, a 60-hour course over four weekends, as an advanced intensive study for yoga practitioners and teachers. The course is also part of the Center for BodyMindMovement’s Somatic Movement Educator (SME) training, leading to certification as a Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist through the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association. More information about the full SME program can be found on the school’s website.

In our life we all need to maintain physical health. We need to build healthy relationships. We need to achieve personal satisfaction and inner happiness. We need to realize the deep sense of meaning of our life. What is essential for all the above things is a healthy mind. The ancient Greeks glorified the body, its wellbeing and health, as well as the mind. The Romans famously said that man’s ideal should be ‘mens sana in corpore sano”! Healthy mind in a healthy body. And in China Lao- Tse spoke of harmony achieved by equilibrium of the mind. And the Buddha said that good health was the greatest profit, and contentment is the greatest wealth one could accumulate. Though many of us are aware of the value of a healthy mind, we rarely know the way to achieve it. Meditation is a systematic method to develop a healthy mind. Achieving a healthy mind is not only about eradicating viruses that make the mind sick but also about developing positive qualities of the mind. It is a mental culture, which has three phases: knowing the mind, shaping the mind and freeing the mind. Let us systematically examine these ancient voices, which a few of us hear like the soothing rustling of the mountain winds, when we practice meditation. It is then and only then, that we begin to hear the voice of silence promising each of us peace, harmony, and insight. Come and join us to explore the possibility and the ways for cultivating a healthy mind.
This is a six-week series that includes six-Monday evening mediation sessions with Bhante Pema. The material will be presented in a progressive way so that each week will build on skills learned before. There is limited space available in this intimate training, so please register as soon as you know you can make the commitment to this practice. The cost is $50 for the series and there will also be a donation bowl out for donations that will go directly to the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center. A payment plan is available with a $20 deposit. Absolutely no experience with meditation will be required, but we also welcome more experienced practitioners to this series. We are confident that beginners and more advanced practitioners can all benefit from this unique training course.

This is a course about developing your own voice as a teacher. It is open to all teacher training participants and yoga instructors that would like to be a part of a workshop environment to explore: pose modifications, teaching techniques, exploring your voice, using props to support excellent alignment, how to safely provide physical adjustments, class sequencing, creative vinyasa-flow sequences, and the business of yoga. All participants will assist in classes, attend each other’s classes and provide feedback and teach at least two classes of their own. Even if you have already completed a 200-hour training program, this is an excellent way to explore your role as a yoga instructor in a supportive, honest and inspiring environment. We will give you all the tools and support you need to move forward in the transition from student to teacher or from teacher to great teacher.
