I started my yoga path in my teens by resisting it. While learning to read Classical Chinese and having the opportunity to explore some brief sections of Classical Daoist texts while in college and graduate school, I realized that in my resistance I was also opening to the potential of it. Then, one day, exhausted and stressed over a seminar paper in graduate school I walked by a sign taped to a lamp post that said, “Are you STRESSED?” The answer, of course, was a resounding YES and so that night I took my very first yoga class. Now, here I am, more than 20-years later, the owner of my own yoga studio. The lesson? Be careful what you resist, it may just be exactly what you are looking for.
I am a teacher and I am delighted to share what I know about yoga with all levels of students. As I have spent a great deal of time in academic settings, and feel informed not only by my personal practice and study, but also by science, research and historical knowledge, it makes sense that my style of teaching is straight forward. I like to leave room for my students to find their own path and allow their personal experiences and self-study to inform their practice. In this way, a reciprocal relationship of compassion, joy and respect is generated between me and my students. We are mindful and safe to explore ourselves in the company of others.
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chinese and East Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. My research interests have ranged from Sixth Dynasty Buddhist Cave Art to Uighur language study to Medical Anthropology. My yoga inspiration comes from my wonderful teachers, especially Jill Satterfield who inspired me to a deeper practice and to become a yoga teacher, and of course, my magnificent students. I am registered with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT and continue to study Vajra Yoga with Jill Satterfield, meditation with Bhante Pema and embodied anatomy with Mark Chandlee Taylor. Special thanks to Dharmashakti who, in just two brief visits to Pittsburgh, has made a significant offering of light and love that resonates in my heart-mind with such sincerity that I am not sure how I might have lived without it. His work together with Kushala has helped me refine my truest voice and inspires me daily to live with great passion.
